Condursos Garden Center has come a long way from its humble beginnings..
Located on River Road in Montville, nestled between the Rockaway River and Crooked Brook, Bartholomew and Rose Condurso, immigrants of Avellino, Italy, purchased a 30 acre dairy farm from the Dalton family in 1929. Here they raised 8 children and started a family farm that would grow for generations to come.
Our 95 year journey began with a deep-routed passion for horticuture..
Condursos River Front Farms
1929-1980
1929-1980
Starting out, the Condurso family farmed the land, growing varieties of vegetables and flowers with the main focus being celery, lettuce and tomatoes.
Vegetables and potted annuals grown on the farm were sold on site or at the Bronx Terminal and Hunts Point Market.
In 1934, a distinctive barn was built out of stone pulled from the fields, that provided cool storage for harvested produce for well over 40 years.
In 1950, the first glass greenhouse was constructed on the northwestern boundary of the property, custom built along River Road where it stands today.
